A personal account of easy virtue! : Wednesday 20. July 2005
Hit me!
Search Engine Optimisation. The murky art of tinkering with your site to get it noticed by the search engines. It is pretty important and there are even companies who specialise in this service alone. But its relatively easy to get hits of dubious quality in significant quantity. Read on for the scoop on Kylie's continuing pulling power!
In August 2002 the streets of Sydney were full of Kylie posters touting her new lingerie range. In my pocket I was carrying a new toy, a keyring sized digital camera. Kylie caught my eye and I took some snaps.
I used one on a little travel site I ran at the time. I made a bit of a joke about it being a blatant grab for hits, having a pic of Kylie semi nude on the site. Which of course meant the words 'Kylie' and 'nude' were also on the site. Clever that!
A year later the logs for the site showed it was still pulling in hits on the strength of those words and the picture. Kylie had long since departed the site, so the hopeful visitors got the dreaded 404, but they would have been disappointed anyway.
It's relatively easy to conjure up hits by volume in this kind of gratuitous way, but numbers aren't what really count.
